Who We Are
Ventura Citizens
for Hillside Preservation is an all-volunteer grassroots organization
that was organized by community members in November 2000 after we learned
of plans to build a massive development in the hillsides of Ventura.
In
November 2001, VCHP helped pass Measure P, which requires a vote of
the people before city services can be extended to the hillsides. The
following November, our group led the successful campaign to defeat
the Measure A ballot initiative which would have allowed the construction
of 1,390 houses in the hills.
We
work to educate the public on the environmental and quality of life
impacts of the proposed development, research alternatives to the development,
and present a unified voice to public officials and landowners. We represent
a nonpartisan cross section of community members, about 2,000 strong
and growing.
A tax-exempt organization named Ventura Hillsides Conservancy has been
formed to pursue the purchase of the entire hillsides area.
